In search of a “third hand”: prospects for robotization

There is such a joke: in the process of evolution, drivers of “minibuses” will have a third hand to take money for travel and pass change.

A joke is a joke, but probably any of us at least once in our lives physically felt that he “lacks hands” – in the Russian language, even such an idiomatic expression exists, which means that there is also a problem that belongs to the category of “eternal”.
What to do?
Many purely domestic tasks are very difficult (sometimes impossible) to do alone. The same bookshelf to hang or something to nail-you need the participation of an assistant (maybe not even one).

Finally, in everyday life, especially if a person is busy with work or for some reason is limited in their physical abilities, it is difficult to do without help and third-party participation.
People with disabilities, the disabled, and the elderly alone are those who are in dire need of a permanent assistant – and, unfortunately,this role is not always fulfilled by people-social workers, family and friends.
The eternal question arises: what to do?
The answer is to create a robot assistant with broad functions, according to robotics experts.
It should be an assistant with the simplest, but diverse “abilities”, and not an” artificial intelligence ” that can talk about philosophical topics or conduct intimate conversations.
To iron a shirt and “go” for groceries, “look out” on the street to find out what the weather is, and then serve the appropriate clothes… these are just a few of the things that such a “domestic servant”should be able to do.
Smart home, smart assistants
Robot assistants fit perfectly into the concept of a “smart home”, not even complementing it, but giving a complete look.
Indeed, the “smart home” should also be populated by “smart assistants” who can be given orders even remotely.
You’re on your way home from the office. We’re hungry. You have crossed your native threshold, washed your face, and in the living room or in the kitchen, the table is already set and served by caring “silent waiters” who received instructions from above, that is, from you. You got in the car and made the necessary manipulations on the remote control before pressing the gas pedal.
And if you have unexpected guests? Immediately, you can give a command and in the living room or on the veranda, a table will be set for the right number of people, and food and drinks will be removed from the bins.
All this, of course, is still a flight of fancy, but this is exactly how any inventions and discoveries – innovations, as they say now, began.
“Smart home” and even with “assistants” – the pleasure is not cheap.
But there is an old English folk wisdom: “We are not rich enough to buy cheap things.”
Indeed, you can buy a cheap low-comfort house or studio apartment and spend a lot of money every year to repair and bring to mind the living space. And you can spend more, but get a good “fortress” for this money, getting rid of the hassle and worries for decades. These are high-quality, eco-friendly building materials, layout, smart “bells and whistles” … and, of course, loyal helpers in the house itself, including the “guard”.
All this may even require the creation of a special infrastructure in the future, for example, for the delivery of products from the store to the house. But after all, the organization of automobile traffic with all the special markings, gas stations, too, did not appear suddenly. Paths, special carts that deliver products from a special store-warehouse to your home, a security system, protection against hacking – all this, perhaps in the near future, will become the realities of our life.
Question price – time
As you know, robots today are not cheap fun. This is expressed not only in monetary terms, but also in time terms.
Even the most trained engineering team on average can spend from 2 to 3 years to create a robot. Of these, a year and a half and even more is spent on creating the so-called “initial form of the robot”. This is far from the robot itself, but rather a “fetus”, “pupa” – a preliminary assembly containing everything necessary for the robot to be born.
That is, the overall appearance is more less formed; there is a housing; mobile mechanics are thought out, and correctly combined with the housing without “surprises”; the main internal blocks are placed. Thus, in a year and a half, developers get only a more or less necessary technical platform, on the basis of which they can already start making their own robot.
