I Need To Mend My Broken Heart

OK, so your heart is broken? What is the big deal, go fix it. Can’t be that hard. It’s not like it never happened to you before. You’ve been there and survived. The world didn’t end! Life went on. It’s not that hard, just look at the bright side. You are better off now! I couldn’t stand it anymore anyways! I need to find ways to mend my broken heart.

Nothing will bring you down and nothing can keep you down. Your heart is broken but your spirit is not. You know you will feel better soon, but until then it is just painful.

I know, denial is supposed to be the first stage of healing after a traumatic event. And losing a loved one is probably as traumatic as it can get. Especially when your love just left you, dumped you, abandoned you. And you are left, holding your bleeding heart in your hands wondering how can you stop the pain, how can you start laughing again, when will the sun start shining again.

Before you can get there, you need to know where you are going. My grandfather always had some cryptic advise for every situation in life. Realize now is the time to start over, wash away the old you and bring in the new shiny, improved version. Build on top of your strengths and bury those pesky little bad habits.

Of course it seems almost impossible to believe that one day you will wake up and the sun indeed started shining again. You realize you don’t need anybody to be happy. You don’t need anything to be happy. You and you alone are responsible for your happiness. You can share your happiness with other people or even with your loved ones, but don’t make other’s responsible for your happiness. That is your job.

In the middle of the night you are consumed with thoughts of revenge and at the same time you dream about having one last romantic encounter. You remember only the good times, when everything was working out just fine. You forgot about the fights, the disagreements, the petty little nabs. But when you wake up the next morning, you must fill the void that’s left with the things that matter to you. Renew your friendships, rediscover the movies, the theater, the opera or whatever it is you like.

But be careful! Many people resort to soul food, lots of it. Chocolate and pasta, or even worse wine and heavy drinks. Don’t, it’s not worth it. Life goes on unless you keep it from doing so. Stuffing yourself like a Christmas goose is not going to help your cause, nor will drunken stupor. The best cure for your broken heart is to become active, go out meet people, and enjoy life. Sounds easy enough, just don’t drown in self-pity. If you don’t like yourself do you really think somebody else will?

Hard to believe but you have nothing to worry. Once you start feeling better other people will start seeing you again. They will notice who you are and sure enough you will find love again. I know it is hard to believe now, but somewhere out there your new love is already looking for you.
