Satellite internet is a lot like the other main broadband services. In order to use the service you sign a contract for a certain period of time. Initially, the deal is usually exceptional, but at some point the normal price kicks in and your cost rises, often significantly. Despite that a cheap satellite internet package is still possible. This is how you can get it.
There are advantages and disadvantages to having satellite high speed internet. The disadvantage is the fact that you have to pay more than with DSL or cable internet. The advantage lies with the fact that satellite internet is an emerging technology.
Any new product entering the marketplace starts off costing a lot more than it does down the road. For instance, think about flat screen TVs. They were so expensive when they first were marketed. But today you can get a flat screen at a reasonable cost. The same applies to internet via satellite. The cost drops as technology improves.
Because of the limited customer base, satellite providers of internet services rarely use conventional advertising. That’s why, when your promotional price is over, you should contact your service provider and ask about new packages and pricing.
Maybe there will be a new package available and maybe not. But the point is you probably won’t be aware of it unless you ask them. And if there isn’t one now, call them back in 6 months. Things change very quickly in this industry.
Whatever you do, don’t wait until your contract is up. I have first hand knowledge of this and it cost me. My contract was over and was continuing on a month to month basis. I was thinking about looking around for a new deal but hadn’t pursued anything.
Then one day out of the blue I got a phone call from my internet service provider offering a better package and better pricing if I renewed for a year. Because of updates and improvements in their satellite service, they could now offer their existing customers an improved package for less money.
If I had contacted them as soon as my contract expired I could have been saving $30 per month for more than 6 months. They were going through their customer files and offering new deals to customers who had completed their contracts when my name came up.
Better yet is that if at any time a better price comes into effect during the period of my contract, I am eligible for it, just by renewing again for a year.
As internet via satellite becomes a more and more competitive business, more service providers will be trying to get their piece of this booming market. When an internet provider already has you as a customer, they will go to great lengths to avoid losing you. The results can be only good for consumers, as they offer better deals on better packages.
Be sure to take full advantage of this. Check out the competition, but while you’re at it don’t forget about seeing what your own internet service provider is offering. The bottom line is that you can get cheap satellite internet as an existing customer with a contract.
