From Grass To Class – How Bamboo Floors Are Created

If you start talking about bamboo some people’s minds begin to wander to images of a cute black and white panda bear eating his favorite snack. The idea that bamboo can be used to create flooring that is as durable and attractive as hardwood is hard to imagine. Exactly then how does a mere piece of grass get turned into one of the most eco friendly flooring options available today?

When the bamboo is freshly harvested the green skin is removed from the outside and then each individual stalk cut into equal lengths. These lengths which at this point still have their rounded appearance, are expertly milled to flatten them and then placed into a hot oven to get rid of the excessive amounts of moisture that bamboo contains.

Once removed from the kiln the bamboo is then put into large pots and boiled. The boiling process does two major things; help produce the rich amber colors that make bamboo flooring unique to behold and to remove all those tasty starches and sugars that the pandas crave so much since if they were allowed to remain they would be instant insect magnet.

The bamboo then makes a second trip to the oven and then each strip is glued and pressed together with others to form the actual flooring planks themselves which now just like solid hardwoods all have their own distinctive patterns, colors and swirls.

As a final step the bamboo is then coated with an aluminum oxide to give it even more strength and further enhance its unique beauty. The finished product is a material that is every bit as durable and beautiful as traditional hardwood flooring, suitable for use in almost any room in your home or office
