Facebook to Suspend Instagram Development for Kids amid Criticism after WSJ Investigation

The publication stated that Instagram harms the psyche of teenagers, but the social network is silent about this.

Instagram Facebook and Instagram will reconsider the project,” the company said, “although we believe that creating Instagram for children is the right decision.” The social network will continue to pay special attention to the safety of teenagers and the expansion of parental control functions.
The company made this decision due to harsh criticism from users and lawmakers, CNBC writes.
Instagram Facebook announced in March 2021 that Facebook would launch a separate Instagram for children under the age of 13. Now the policy of the social network prohibits children from using the service.
Legislators of 44 US states called on the company to abandon the development back in May. But then Facebook said that children already use the Internet, and the social network wants to provide them with a safe experience.
In September, The Wall Street Journal released an investigation about Facebook. The publication also said that Instagram harms the psyche of teenagers, and the social network suppresses this fact.
After the WSJ investigation, U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal and Marsha Blackburn said they would launch an investigation. They are concerned about the possible harm of Instagram to the psyche of teenagers.
