Can The Atlanta Falcons Compete With The Saints?

After a great finish to the 2008 season, the Falcons were the toast of the NFL. Coming off of a few losing seasons, the team was revitalized, thanks in large part to three people.

Sophomore QB Matt Ryan turned a lot of heads in 08′, having a fantastic rookie year. It seems that times have changed in the NFL and starting a rookie QB right off the bat isn’t such a bad thing – but not all have the talent like Matt Ryan. When they drafted Matt Ryan, I did believe he was more prepared for the NFL than most stud rookies I’ve seen in a while.

The Atlanta Falcons were the “darlings” of the NFL in 08′ with a record of 11-5, surprising most in their success a year after compiling a record of 4-12 in 07′. While the Falcons lost to the Arizona Cardinals in the Wild Card playoff game, the future is bright for the Falcons and Matt Ryan.

The Falcons got to work quickly in week 1, easily beating the Miami Dolphins, winners of the AFC East last year. The team was dealt an equally challenging opponent in week 2 in the Carolina Panthers, winners of the NFC South last year.

The Falcons won both games, and now sit pretty with a 2-0 record. Week 3 will be a test for two reasons. First of all, the team plays away from home for the first time all season. In addition to heading on the road, they’re also facing Tom Brady and the Patriots.

If Matt Ryan stays healthy and protected, distributes the ball efficiently and limits turnovers – the Falcons may see post season action for the second year in a row and contend in the NFC. No one thought the Arizona Cardinals would make the Super Bowl – 09′ can be the year for the Falcons.
